Ajit Pawar's Plane Crash: A Detailed Analysis of the Tragedy
The sudden and tragic death of Ajit Pawar, a prominent political figure in Maharashtra, has left the nation in shock. The mid-size business jet, carrying Ajit Pawar and four others, crashed at Baramati airport on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at 8:44 am, just a minute after being cleared for landing at 8:43 am. The Civil Aviation Ministry's statement, backed by the Air Traffic Control (ATC) report, reveals a series of events that led to the devastating crash.
The Learjet 45 aircraft, operated by VSR Ventures Private Limited, was advised to descend in visual meteorological conditions, maintaining visual separation from terrain and other aircraft. The crew inquired about winds and visibility, and was informed that the winds were calm and visibility was around 3,000 meters. However, the aircraft reported that the runway was not in sight, leading to a go-around. After the go-around, the crew reported that the runway was in sight, and the aircraft was cleared to land on runway 11.
Despite being cleared to land, the aircraft did not give a readback of the landing clearance. The ATC then observed flames around the threshold of runway 11 at 0844 IST, indicating a crash. The wreckage fell on the left side of the runway, and the aircraft was destroyed. The Baramati airport is an uncontrolled airfield, where flying schools operate the ATC, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has taken over the investigation, with the AAIB chief en route to the accident site. VSR Ventures, the operator of the aircraft, is a non-scheduled operator (NSOP) and is responsible for its own aircraft maintenance. The DGCA records show that the Learjet 45 aircraft, manufactured in 2010, had experienced pilots with over 15,000 and 1,500 flying hours, and all mandatory requirements were in place. The aircraft's air operator permit was valid until 2028.
This tragic incident raises questions about the safety protocols and procedures in place for such flights. The investigation by the AAIB will be crucial in determining the exact cause of the crash and ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future.
