Alamo Area Aquatics Association Restructuring: What It Means for San Antonio Swimming (2026)

While the swimming world is buzzing with mergers, one organization is daring to go its own way—and it’s raising eyebrows. The Alamo Area Aquatics Association (AAAA), a multi-site swim club with seven locations across San Antonio, is bucking the trend of consolidation by restructuring and splitting into separate entities. But here’s where it gets controversial: instead of pooling resources like many large clubs, AAAA’s larger locations, affiliated with public school districts, are breaking away to operate independently. Why? According to a source close to the team, the goal is to allow each location to thrive on its own terms, maximizing their potential to support aquatic sports in the region. “This restructuring ensures that every site can operate at its highest level,” the source explained. “A group of smaller locations will continue under the AAAA brand, while others will forge their own paths.”

One of the first to confirm the split is the Southwest ISD location, which will conclude its short course season with AAAA and relaunch as the Southwest Aquatic Warriors (SAW) in 2026. While other breakaway locations haven’t been officially named, insiders speculate that Northside ISD and North East ISD—two of the largest sites with multiple high schools—are likely candidates. Judson ISD, another sizable program, is also expected to go independent. The remaining locations, including the Jewish Community Center (JCC), San Antonio Nadadores (the largest of the three), and the Comal site, will continue under a revised AAAA structure.

And this is the part most people miss: AAAA’s move comes at a time when major clubs are merging left and right. Last summer, California’s Beach Cities Swimming and Alpha Aquatics joined forces, citing inefficiencies in the South Bay Area. Similarly, the Pleasanton Seahawks and Crow Canyon Sharks merged in January 2025, and in 2022, Club Kick Start teamed up with the North Carolina Aquatic Club. These mergers aim to expand membership and resources, but AAAA’s approach challenges the notion that bigger is always better. Is this a bold step toward localized excellence, or a risky fragmentation of resources? We want to hear your thoughts in the comments.
