Toronto Public Health Announces Vaccine Record Policy for Students
In a recent development, Toronto Public Health (TPH) has decided to take a more lenient approach towards students' vaccine records for the remainder of the school year. This decision comes as a relief to many families who were previously threatened with suspension for their children's vaccination status. The health officials aim to provide parents with additional time to ensure their children's records are up to date, promoting a healthier and more inclusive learning environment.
The initial concern arose from a review of vaccine records for students in Grades 2-5, which identified several cases of outdated records. TPH sent letters to parents, notifying them of potential suspension orders between November and February if the records were not updated. However, the health unit's proactive approach has led to a positive response, with many families taking immediate action.
To address the issue, TPH has decided not to suspend any more students under the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) for the rest of the school year. This decision is a strategic move to give parents the necessary time to update their children's records, ensuring compliance with the act's requirements. The rules outlined in ISPA remain in effect, emphasizing the importance of providing immunization cards or seeking formal exemptions for medical, conscience, or religious reasons.
The immunization schedule mandated by the province covers essential vaccines such as measles, mumps, diphtheria, rubella, tetanus, polio, pertussis (whooping cough), and meningococcal disease. For students born in 2010 or later, Ontario also requires varicella (chickenpox) immunization. TPH's commitment to assisting families in reporting records and updating vaccination status is evident in their ongoing support.
Despite the positive outcome, the health unit has not disclosed the exact number of students who were suspended over immunization records in the 2025-2026 school year. However, a previous incident in Peel Region involved 5,397 students being suspended for non-compliance with ISPA, highlighting the potential impact of such policies on student attendance.
This decision by TPH demonstrates a balanced approach, considering both the importance of vaccination compliance and the practical needs of families. By providing support and extending deadlines, the health officials aim to create a harmonious learning environment while adhering to public health regulations.
